About

Wordwell is a website for people who like words. It offers twenty games built from letters, spellings and sayings, free to play, in any modern browser.

What you will find

The games fall into four groups. Deduce is for code-breakers: hidden words and scrambled messages. Assemble is about building, from single letters up to whole sentences. Quick has the timed rounds. Know is a set of ten-question quizzes on meaning, spelling, rhyme and grammar.

Every game has its own page with three lines of instructions and a longer guide. The guides were written for this site and describe exactly how each game behaves here.

How the games are put together

The question banks, word lists and sayings were compiled by hand, and each was checked: every answer word is a real, common word, every deliberately wrong spelling is a real mistake, and no wrong option accidentally forms a correct answer. The list used to check typed words comes from a widely used open word list, and takes in British and American spellings alike.

The games favour large buttons and their own on-screen keyboard, so they are comfortable on a small touchscreen.

Paying for it

The site is free. It may show adverts to cover costs. They are kept in the page, away from the game itself, and you can opt for non-personalised adverts. See the privacy page.

What we do not do

We do not have accounts, we do not collect names or email addresses, and we do not keep your results. Those stay in your browser.

Talk to us

Corrections are especially welcome on a site about words. If you find a mistake, a doubtful answer or a word that should have been accepted, write to hello@example.com. More on the contact page.
