Missing Vowels

The vowels have been taken out of a word. Put them back in the right order.

About Missing Vowels

Missing Vowels shows you the skeleton of a word. The consonants are all there, in the right places. The vowels are not. Your task is to put them back.

How it works

Each word has a highlighted gap. Tap the vowel that belongs there, and the highlight moves to the next gap. Fill every gap correctly and you score a point.

There is no second chance within a word. If you tap the wrong vowel, the game fills in the answer, shows you what the word was, and moves on. A round is ten words, all of them everyday nouns between six and eight letters long.

On a keyboard, you can simply press the vowel keys.

Reading words without vowels

Work out the whole word before you tap anything. This is the most important habit. The first gap may seem obvious, but it is only safe to fill once you know what the word is.

Say the consonants aloud. "B-LL-N" sounds a good deal like "balloon" when you run the letters together. Your ear is often quicker than your eye.

Count the gaps. Two gaps side by side mean a vowel pair such as EA, OU, AI or OO. A single gap between consonants is a lone vowel.

Look at the ending. A gap followed by R at the end of a word is very often E, as in "summer" or "ladder". A gap before N at the end may well be O or E.

Think of the category. The words are ordinary objects, animals, places and people.

If two words fit the same consonants, choose the commoner one.

Eight out of ten is a good score. It is a quiet, satisfying kind of puzzle, and one of the more unusual HTML5 games on the site.
