Word Builder

Six letters, ninety seconds. Make as many words as you can.

About Word Builder

Word Builder hands you six letters and a clock. Every word you can make from them counts, from little three-letter ones up to the single six-letter word that uses the lot.

How it works

Tap the tiles to spell, or type on a keyboard. The word appears above them as you go. Press "Enter word" to submit it, "Delete" to take back the last letter, and "Shuffle" to rearrange the tiles, which often shakes loose a word you had not seen.

Each word is checked against a list of about fifteen thousand English words. If it is accepted, it joins your list. If not, the game says so. The status line shows how many words you have found and how many exist for those six letters, usually somewhere between twenty and eighty.

Words must be at least three letters long, and you cannot enter the same one twice.

Finding more words

Start small and work up. Three-letter words come quickly and often point to longer ones. If you find "art", try "rat" and "tar", then "tart" if the letters allow, and "start" beyond that.

Add an S. If the letters include one, nearly every noun and verb you find has a second form.

Swap one letter at a time. From "seat" try "sear", "seal", "teas", "east". Chains like this are faster than hunting from scratch.

Look for endings and beginnings: ED, ER, ES and ING at the end, RE and UN at the front.

Shuffle when you dry up. Seeing the same letters in a new order is the quickest way to spot something fresh.

Hunt for the six-letter word. There is always at least one.

Fifteen words is a solid round. For HTML5 games about vocabulary, it is hard to beat for sheer "one more go".
